1:19 P.M.

What was taking so long?

What were they doing to her?

Ethan had taken up pacing around his cell after Sparrow had been dragged away. For hours he’d watched her pace, tried to remain the calm one because he felt like that was what Sparrow needed. He’d kept his fear—not for himself but for her—under wraps as best as he could and tried to distract her from her own fear with teasing and banter. It had seemed to work and knowing he was helping her helped him too.

With Sparrow gone, he couldn’t seem to keep his emotions under wraps anymore. He was pacing the small cell just as Sparrow had been earlier.

This time alone left him with nothing to do but think.

And think.

And think.

About Sparrow, about this thing between them, about Sierra, about the past, about his future and what it looked like.

Sparrow was the best thing to happen to him in a long time, and it was like fate had thrown her in his path. Even after he’d made a complete disaster of their lovemaking and thought it was too late to salvage any sort of relationship between them, fate had stepped in again, forcing them together.

That wasn’t all fate seemed to be trying to force.

Here, trapped with Sparrow, not sure what was happening to her or how badly she was being hurt, he couldn’t not admit—at least to himself—that he had feelings for her. Real feelings. Feelings that went beyond mere attraction and friendship. Feelings he didn't think were going to go anywhere even if the source was removed.

He could let Sparrow walk away, knowing that she would likely end up meeting someone—probably someone better than him who could give her what she deserved—and having her own happily ever after while he was left alone.

Or he could do something.

Ethan just didn't know what that something would be.

A door opened somewhere nearby, and he stalked to the front of his cage and strained to look down in the direction Sparrow had been taken. A moment later, he saw her being led back, stumbling, and being mostly dragged along by the same two men who had taken her.

Her face was pale, and it looked like she was being carried more than walking on her own.

How badly was she hurt?

“Sparrow?” The word came out a low growl, and he wasn’t the only one who heard the danger in his tone because both the guards cast him wary glances.

“I'm okay,” she said, but her voice was heavy with pain and panting with exertion.

“You're not. What did they do?” Ethan contemplated taking a swing at the men as they walked past and stopped outside his cell to open Sparrow’s. It wouldn’t change anything, Sparrow would still be hurting, and they’d both still be trapped, and he’d probably earn himself a beating, but even if he was punished, hitting the men who hurt Sparrow would make him feel better, release a little of the anger threatening to choke him.

“Hit me,” she said briefly. When one
